For the past week or two, I’ve been brainstorming character ideas for our upcoming campaign. Every time I’d come up with one, though, I’d realize that I was just replaying an old character in a new game. I got a few ideas from my previous Jungian Archetype Generator, but that tool deals in very abstract concepts, and it’s really easy to unintentionally steer it back toward an old standby.
In an attempt to spark some new ideas, I checked out some “personality tests.” I’m not talking about magazine survey ones here, but heavy duty Psychology PhD-designed ones. I settled on one called the 16PF for the sixteen personality factors it attempts to measure, each with nice, tangible descriptions of a high or low score. With the addition of some automation, we have a random personality generator!
The idea, of course, is that you use the suggested personality factors as inspiration for your characters. If you don’t like some of the results, the tool allows you to set your own values. Hopefully this will put me on track for a PC outside my usual range.
In the meantime, check out our new Personality Generator!
